Air Handlers

The remediation of an Air Handler begins with the initial inspection.

  1. A complete inspection should be carried out to determine the extent of damage to the spray pans, drip pans, fans, sound insulation, flooring, walls.
  2. All surfaces MUST be clean, dry, sound, free of dirt, oil and any other contaminants which would impede bonding of the coatings directly to the existing substrate.
  3. The Tri-Tec Representative in your area will assist in providing information on approved methods of proper surface preparation.

Next comes the Rust Conversion.

  1. Following approved substrate preparation, one coat of RustGard shall be applied to all surfaces at a rate of 2 mm. D.F.T. Allow sufficient curing time before applying the protective top coat(s). The ultimate curing conditions: Temperature 20 degrees C and relative humidity of 50% or lower.
  2. It is recommended that rubber gloves be worn and that the product NOT be transferred to a metal container.
  3. RustGard can be applied by either spray, brush or roller to achieve the recommended D.F.T. or 2 mls. When spraying, a single nozzle airless gun is all that is required. Maximum operating pressure should be 2400 psi.

Then the Finish Coats

  1. Overcoat total area with one coat of 986-8 Grey Submersible Primer-Finish and allow it to become dry to the touch before applying the second coat, for a total D.F.T. of 5 mls. minimum. Sufficient cure time should be allowed and no water should be run through the units for this period of time. However, air may be run through the units immediately upon completion of the work. The finish coats may be applied by spray, brush or roller.

For ease of application, both RustGard and 986-8 Submersible Primer-Finish coats should be stored at room temperature prior to application.

Now the Spray and Drip Pans
All rusted areas, including pin-holing should respond to a maximum of two coats of RustGard. The second coat to be applied when the first coat is dry to the touch. After sufficient curing time, the two top coats of 986-8 Submersible Primer-Finish should be applied.

Finally, the Floors
Some air-handling units have concrete floors within the units. The floor next to the spray pan in particular, should be free of cracks. If the floor requires repair, the following procedures should be followed.

  1. 1. All surfaces should be clean, dry and free of dirt, oil and other contaminants which would affect the bonding of the coatings.
  2. Chip out any cracking and fill with an appropriate joint-filling compound.
  3. Into a coat of 986-8 Submersible Primer-Finish, embed a four-inch mesh between the wall and the floor and apply second coat.
  4. Overcoat the entire area with 2 coats of 986-8 Grey Submersible Primer-Finish coating to a minimum D.F.T. of 5 mm.

Galvanized floors are to be treated with RustGard and 986-8 Submersible Finish Coats as above.

NOTE:It is recommended that the above work be performed in the off hours, and preferably on a weekend, starting on Friday evening at 5:00 pm to Sunday evening.
